I thought it was unnecessary. And, it was well done. So what it had a harp and a choir singers. Also, he was very democratic about the job. Those are the 3 biggest songs on the album.

Because both he and John were so sick of the project that they had agreed to let George and Ringo supervise what Spector was doing. But by then it was too late. During the research for my book, I came across the original letter that Spector sent to the four Beatles. Rather than the authoritarian rant I was expecting, his note turned out to be extremely friendly.

If you wish, please call me about anything regarding the album tonight. My point here is that far from acting like a tyrant, and refusing to communicate with Paul McCartney, Phil Spector did everything he could to ensure that all four Beatles approved of his work. I think the real story is that Paul left it a bit late to listen to the approval acetate and that when he sent his famous letter to Klein with instructions for changes, the sides by then had been drawn, with Lennon, Ono, Klein, Harrison and a reluctant Ringo against him.

I have read this somewhere and cant remember what the source was but in it Macca suggests his objections were perhaps , shall we say a touch exaggerated? I agree with you. But that fell through for what ever reason. Oh, so that is why in response to a comment made by Spector that his so-called superior producing skills is what drove Wilson to insanity, Wilson stated that not only was it not true, but that he had surpassed Spector with Pet Sounds alone.

If anyone is more insane than the other it is Spector, who is horribly overrated to be honest. I give credit where credit is due in respect to some of his earlier productions, but by the time of Let it Be, he was well past his prime. Quite a bit of his best work has had to be remastered due to the muddiness that the Wall of Sound produced, Wilson did the same thing with one good ear by the way without saturating the master to the point of being near impossible to listen to.

Personally, I could never stand his records, even when I thought the song was great. I find the Spector version somewhat better. I have high hopes that the Giles Martin remix of it will be the best version of the album, featuring some of the advantages of LTBN like a more spread-out mix , but keeping things like the dialog and shorter songs, and also lowering the volume of the orchestra.

The Long and winding Road on Naked is painfully boring. Sounds like a demo. Billy Preston on piano would have greatly improved this track. What makes The Long and Winding Road great on its own is the starkness of the recording, something that Spector completely trampled on with his version. You have to ask, why recreate a Spector edit in the first place?

Exactly so. The LIBN version of Road is an intimate and understated song about regret, while the Spector version is an overblown and bombastic thing which mainlines overwrought tragedy. Or the book of The Hobbit vs the movies. In all cases, I prefer the understated versions. More reverential than the LIB version, thus more fitting to the song and more fitting to the gentler production than the overblown one on LIB.

Also a much prettier melody. This version is also produced by George Martin, not Spector. It is available on the Past Masters album. I wish they did more of this on Abbey Road. John obviously kept the stripped down approach for his solo lp later. Great sound on the LIBN thanks to pro tools huh?

For this reason LIBN is my preferred version. I always wondered why nobody ever seems to notice or comment how out of tune Johns guitar is for a few of the songs on this record. It just occurred to me. Just lead bits and power chords. And they admitted to pitch shifting a few off vocal notes.

The Anthology saw that happening a few times where stuff from one take was mixed with another.. It can be done.. So why not fix that outta tune casino a bit and maybe lower it in volume? Or find a different take ya know..

I feel like Johns guitar ruins some of those performances. He probably woulda caught it and be like.. But that was a thing with Hofner basses; if you played high up the neck, it would go out of tune for some reason. Not that I particularly care, either. Love reading all of these comments.

Naked sounds ALOT better than the original. The Naked version of Long and Winding Road, in my opinion, is superior because the bridge finally makes sense musically. I was wrong. Spector took something that made sense in its original form and shoe-horned it into his own vision, where it really felt crammed in there. Across the Universe is also finally listenable on the Naked version.

The LIE Naked version sounds too plain and stark by comparison. I remember being so excited upon hearing the news that LIBN was coming out — at last, I thought — it will be the way they wanted it. Amazed at the comment section here, not only does it span eight years of opinions but also the passion in many of these opinions.

A joy to read. My 2 cents? A release of the Let It Be film with accompaning song track, like with the reelease of Yellow Submarine would have been apt.

Getting the tracks stright from the film takes. Also a release of the Glyn Johns 2nd Get Back album, cleaned up, would have made a lot of sense historically. I enjoy the Spector album. Some douche nozzle, in a magazine?

I scarcely heard any such response. Just that people were eager for the DVD as well, and disappointed that it never materialized. The only difference criticizers generally noticed was the lack of strings on the McCartney piano ballads. And I love your composite Nice work Cheers. So swap track 9 and 10! Love your work, and especially this one. It kinda blows my mind and is easily now one of my favorite Beatles albums. The proof is in the pudding, even if it is served 45 years after the fact.

Thank you so much! I'm curious. Is your reconstruction meant to present the album had been released in '69, as a followup to The White Album, or in '70 as an alternate Let It Be?

If the former the inclusion of "I Me Mine" is a bit anachronistic to me as the song wasn't recorded until January - a full year after the Get Back sessions themselves. I think the take of "Let It Be" you used also has overdubs from January ' Not to sound too critical.

I LOVE this reconstruction! Come to think of it, Phil Spector's choice of takes and edits are still present to some extent so I think I've answered my own question: alternate Let It Be. I should have gone back and re-read your essay, stupid me:P Still, have you ever considered rebuilding the first Glyn Johns mix from '69? It wouldn't sound as good as your version, mind you, though it'd be cool to have that missing link between the White Album and Abbey Road.

Very interesting question because I've recently been asking myself that I've been revisiting this material for a possible upgrade to this, possibly sticking to a strict summer guidelines or match it closer to the actual film. But then you are forced to exclude "I Me Mine" and "Across The Universe" completely, and the album loses a lot of weight.

But then you get down to the nature of this project-- The Beatles abandoned the "live only! This was the single version. As progressed, it became very convoluted and there doesn't seem to be any definitive Get Back that is releasable. Working on it though. Sorry to resurrect a comment from two years ago, but having listened to the outtakes from the White Album 50th release I began to wonder if Harrison's "Not Guilty" could be used as an alternative to "I Me Mine" for the rooftop performance.

Just a thought mind you. Oh, I forgot Let It Be! That would have to be the performance seen in the film without the overdubs. Otherwise that's it. Haha, I saw that. Guess this leaves us with either "Teddy Boy," some other outtake from '68 or Jan '69 for inclusion.

Just realized that the version of "Let It Be" you included is pure Jan '69 so only the two Harrisongs are actually retroactive. This is just fabulous. I've suddenly got a new great Beatles album in ! Finally Get Back album in all it's glory and as Paul wanted it to be originally I guess.

This is fantastic. I've never got on listening to the orig 'Let It Be' or more recently the 'Naked' release, but this is a real joy to play through and hear!! I've listened to Let it Be, Let it Be Naked, and Get Back. While I like the original's version of Across the Universe, I don't care for the album. Let it Be Naked, to my ears at least, was just too polished to present the raw sound that they were going for. I think you struck a good balance between a polished album that is cohesive, and a raw sound.

I've wondered lately wether Glyn Johns could have requested more songs from the Beatles if he felt the material he was given was insufficient to compile a full album. Those two songs would certainly have helped to fill out the contributions from Lennon and Harrison for that tentative July release date. On second thought, Johns was likely obligated to only use the material he was handed so the idea of incorporating songs from before or after the January sessions wouldn't have been possible.

One After 1. For You Blue 2. Dig a Pony 2. The Long and Winding Road 3. I've Got a Feeling 3. Two of Us 4. Don't Let Me Down 4. Maggie Mae 5. Get Back 5. Dig It 6. Let It Be At minutes it's much the same runtime as the Beatles first few LPs which was probably what they were going for anyway with the whole "back to roots" approach. Now it's just a matter of waiting for the inevitable 50th release of Let It Be to see whether Get Back will be given it's due.

One After 2. Dig a Pony 3. I've Got a Feeling 4. Don't Let Me Down 5. It looks as though he comped the best takes throughout those weeks as dailies, and the band with George Martin decided which takes were best as the playbacks are actually heard on the Nagra Reels.

Knowing this, Glyn was tasked to compile an album in March and the takes must have been at his discretion. He then went back and revised it a few times Later in the year, he was privy to what was making the cut in Lindsay Hogg's film version--specifically rehearsals of Across The Universe and I Me Mine--so Glyn was instructed to incorporate that into his compilation, so it could be promoted as a more accurate soundtrack.

I can't remember which of this was on his revised Get Back compilation, too lazy to check. But this was all before Spector entered the picture. I honestly think he was blinded by the stardom of recorded The Beatles, as some of his choices for Get Back were rather questionable. Maybe he felt they could do no wrong?

Or maybe he took Lennon's instruction to present the band with their pants down a little to literally? Not sure. You have made the only project I heard that was suitable for company executives appreciation and eventual official release and not a mere novelty for fan bootleging. The Beatles — Get Back. Side A :.
